Crochet Newborn Diaper Cover Set

I have a friend who is having a little girl in april and I figured what better thing for a newborn than a coordinating diaper cover and headband set!? So i looked around on etsy and found this. But they don't sell their patterns, only the finished product. So I came up with my own pattern.

I crocheted this with I Love This Cotton in Sage and White. (of course you can do it any colors you choose!) The diaper cover has an adjustable button front closure. The set is made to fit a newborn but it can be modified easily to fit older babies. (Though I will only provide the pattern for newborn size in this tutorial.)

Okay so here is the pattern! If you have any questions feel free to ask!

- what you will need:
about 1/2 skein of worsted weight cotton yarn in main color of your choosing.
about 1/3 skein of worsted weight cotton yarn in accent color of your choosing.
size g crochet hook.
yarn needle.
medium sized button same color as accent color (or any color you choose)
thread for sewing on your button.

Diaper Cover:
I used this pattern to work up this quick and easy diaper cover.

Hat:
Rnd 1 - magic ring. ch 3. 9 dc in ring, join with slst to top of beg ch3. (10 dc)
Rnd 2 - ch 3. 2 dc in each dc around. join with slst to top of beg ch3. (20 dc)
Rnd 3 - ch 3. *2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in next dc* repeat from * around ending with 2 dc in last dc. join with slst to top of beg ch3. (30 dc)
Rnd 4 - ch 3. 1 dc in next dc. 2 dc in next dc. *1 dc in each of next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc* repeat from * around ending with 2 dc in last dc. join with slst to top of beg ch3. (40 dc)
Rnd 5 through 10,11, or12 - ch 3. dc in each dc around. join with slst in top of beg ch3. (40 dc)
Finish off and weave in the ends.

Headband: this i just kind of made up as i did it but it turned out nicely.
note: ch 2 at beg of row counts as dc. ch 1 counts as sc.
ch 40.
Row 1 - sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. ch 2. turn.
Row 2 - dc in each sc across. ch 1. turn.
Row 3 - sc in each dc across. do not finish off. ch1. sc around entire peice. finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing. sew the two ends together to form a circle. make sure you do not twist it. you will sew the rose onto the "seam"

Rose Accent:
Loin Brand Yarn has a really nice rose pattern which you can find here.

To finish the set just simply sew a rose onto each item and weave in ends.
Happy Hooking = )

  2. Love this! :) We don't have a Hobby Lobby near by (so sad!) so could you use any cotton yarn? The only kind I'm really familiar with is the Lily Sugar n' Cream brand. Would that work? Or is it not bulky/soft enough? Any feedback would be great, thanks! :)

  3. I feel like it's super small. :( did I do something wrong? I used G and the correct yarn thickness. Maybe I'm just forgetting how small a newborn is???

    1. Me too! I have been crocheting for about 50 years, no kidding, love the pattern but no matter what yarn the item turns out small.

  4. What would I have to do to make this for a 1 year old?
